3. Key items to discuss and to know:
    a.  Consider the geographic area and dates of the Indus Valley civilization, possible contact with other civilization (e.g., the Sumerians), as well as the proto-types seen in the yogic positions on the seals.  (See pages 157-160).
    b.  See information throughout the chapter, especially related to the images of the Yakshi, and the later Visvanatha Temple.
    c. The "Vedic period" and the origins of  the pre-Hindu deities.  See page 160 on the  the Vedas, and page 168 on Hinduism.  See #5d below for current scholarly thinking on Indian religious foundations. 
    d. Describe the characteristics of the Buddha in art.  See the inset on page 161.
    e. How are the Bodhisattva and the Yakshi alike and different?  (See page 164.)
    f.  In what ways are the Greco-Roman Gandhara style different from the Indian tradition Mathura style?  See the discussion on pages 164-166.  What influences caused the style seen in the Sarnath Buddha?  See pages 166-167.
