1. Read the chapter.

Begin by clicking on parts of the map of China, presented by the "Emuseum."  Then... explore the arts of China from Jacques Berger's  "World Art Treasures."

2. Vocabulary and terminology:

3. Key items to know:
    a.  Explore the geographic area and date of early Neolithic China.  See pages 181-182.
    b. Examine the incredible amount of terra cotta objects from the tomb of the Qin emperor Shi-Huangdi.  See pages 185-186
    c. See the inset on page 186 on Daoism and Confucianism.  How are these beliefs seen in the art?  How is the art different from that influenced by Buddhism?  How is the Chinese Buddha presented differently from the Indian Buddha?
    d.  See page 188 on "Silk and the Silk Road."  How does the art display the connections between the cultures of Asia and the Near East?  Can you provide an example?
    e.  Examine Xie He's "six canons" of painting. See page 191.
    f. Explore the origins and development of Northern and Southern Song dynasty landscape painting.  See pages 196-198 and 199-202..
    g. Examine Chinese architectural construction methods.  See page 199.  Examine this site on Chinese pagodas.
