ART HISTORY WEEKLY DISCUSSION

The Art History Survey I and II courses taught by Marleen Hoover at San Antonio College use a "LISTSERV" for discussion and participation.  A "LISTSERV" is like 'group email'  and operates in virtual time, meaning you can join in the discussion at any hour of the day or night.  Because you will be required to participate a minimum of once weekly (or twice weekly in the summer) in discussions related to the chapters in the textbook, LISTSERV discussion will be counted as your being "present" in the class and constitute 15% of your total grade.  Each appropriate discussion comment will be recorded as "100" while failure to participate will be recorded as "0".  Please note:  at the end of the semester you will lose approximately one point from your final grade for each time you do not participate as required. 

In order to participate, you must provide your instructor with the email address you will be using for the course.  Send your email address to: mhoover@alamo.edu

Because the discussion comments contribute to your overall grade, they need to respond intelligently to what someone else has written, add more information or comment on a side (but related) issue.  Questions should be genuine and prompted by what someone has written or should seek clarification of someone else's comments.  No "slamming" and please pay attention to "netiquette."  Also, while you may compliment someone because you really liked what they wrote, comments like "good job" or "you wrote a really good paper" constitute evaluation, and that is your instructor's task, not yours.  

Keep in mind that an internet class is not "an independent study" but is a group process, and participation in discussions is an important part of the learning process.

You will receive confirmation from the LISTSERV that you have been subscribed by your instructor.  Use the LISTSERV to send your questions, discussion issues and everything to be seen by the entire class.  The address for writing to everyone on the LISTSERV is:

Use the instructor's email address for any papers, mid-term and final papers, exam answers or for anything else the instructor only should see.   Note that your instructor, Ms. Hoover, usually responds within 24 hours to papers and other materials submitted to her;  if you do not receive a response from her within that time (except for weekends...if you submit something on Fridays after noon, you will hear from your instructor on Mondays), you should call her office at 486-1035, since this may indicate a computer problem.  Remember that it is your responsibility to make sure your emails are getting through!  Please feel free to contact your instructor if you have any questions or problems.
