Frequently Asked Questions

The following are some frequently asked questions about the Phlebotomy training program.

  • How long is the program? 
    The program is a sixteen week program. PLAB 1223 is the didactic part of the training.  It meets on eight consecutive Saturdays from 0800AM to 0430PM.  Upon completion of PLAB 1223 with a "C" or higher, the student is eligible to take PLAB 1263, the clinical portion of the training.  The clinical is four weeks long.  The student is placed in area hospital or outpatient laboratory for four days a week - Monday through Thursday - eight hour days for four weeks.
      
  • Are classes available on weekends or evenings? 
    PLAB 1223 is offered on Saturdays.  The clinical is only offered on weekdays.
      
  • What is the deadline for application?  
    The class will remain open until twenty students have registered and paid.  Phlebotomy courses are offered once each flex semester.  The clinical is offered on a space available basis in the summer.
     
  • What is the job market like?  
    The are numerous job openings for phlebotomists in San Antonio and surrounding areas.  Completing both these courses will allow you to find work anywhere in the country.  Job vacancies are expected to increase over the next five years.
      
  • What are the starting salaries? 
    Starting salaries for phlebotomists are $10.00 per hour.
     
  • Do I need to be licensed or certified to obtain a phlebotomy job? 
    In Texas, no certification or licensure is required to obtain a job. However, other states do require either certification or licensure.
