Check 2010
History
In the mid 1990’s
St. Philip's College embarked on a joint project with local community service
providers to identify children with developmental delays, and make appropriate
referrals to agencies that provided early intervention services. This effort
continued for several years and sparked what is now known as Child Check.
Purpose
The focus of the
event is to increase awareness of early childhood growth and development as well
as impart the importance of early identification and intervention with children
who manifest developmental delays.
Objectives:
1.
To increase
awareness of early childhood growth/development, and the importance of early
identification and intervention with children who manifest developmental delays.
2.
To identify
developmentally delayed children as early as possible by offering free
screenings in the areas of dental, language, social, motor skills, cognition,
and vision. Height and weight checks will also be provided.
3.
To provide
parents with information regarding how they can best serve the needs of a child
with developmental delays.
4.
To link
parents of developmentally delayed children with appropriate community
resources.
5.
To provide
families of young children with information/resources regarding effective
parenting, discipline, health/nutrition, child safety, family violence, and
child care.
