SPC Child Development Center Earns NAEYC Re-accreditation

NATIONALLY-ACCREDITED EARLY LEARNING, CHILD CARE IN 78203: ST. PHILIP'S COLLEGE CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER EARNS RE-ACCREDITATION

Mark of quality comes from National Association for the Education of Young Children

The St. Philip's College Child Development Center team announces that the center at 2207 E. Wyoming St. in the city's Denver Heights neighborhood has been re-accredited by the nation's definitive child care and early learning accrediting association.

Children enrolled at the only center accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children within the Eastside San Antonio 78203 zip code are attending a center that has been re-accredited--a widely recognized mark of high quality.

Monica Guzman leads the college business unit in her capacity as center coordinator.

Child development programs are accredited nationwide by the association for five-year terms. The center at the 120-year-old college has been continuously accredited by the association since 2005, with reaccreditations re-earned in both 2010 and 2015. The college's re-accreditation term is effective April 12, 2018 through July 1, 2023. To earn the latest re-accreditation, the college's center met each of the association's ten Early Learning Program Standards, which are research-based best practices for young children's development and learning, Guzman explained.

A center's re-accreditation is traditionally a sign that the center is a leader in a national effort to invest in high-quality early childhood education, and to help give all children a better start. That leadership includes corporate and community partnerships that lead to excellent outcomes for children at the college's center. In partnership with the U.S. Division of Mexico's Grupo Bimbo, a $8,344 award from the Bimbo Good Neighbor Project in 2016 implemented installation of an innovative fitness and gardening area for children enrolled at the center that now includes a Kids' Fit Exercise Room. The outdoor playground equipment at the center had been enhanced in 2015 with a $13,744 poured-in-place fall protection surface through the Bimbo Good Neighbor Project, an operational cost-reduction measure enhancing safety for an average of 50 children traditionally enrolled at the center, funded by the U.S. division of one of the world's largest baking companies, with field operations two blocks from the center. Annual readings of children's literature for the young children at the center have also traditionally been presented by college faculty and administrators, in addition to center staff. The enrolled children are also annual guests with Fiesta royalty during the college's education-themed CultureFest and Open House community relations programs as well.

Now that the center team has re-achieved this mark of quality and performance excellence, the association looks forward to continuing to work with the team throughout its re-accreditation term in a process of continuous improvement, the hallmark of accreditation systems, said Guzman.

Also certified by Texas Rising Star, the St. Philip's College Child Development Center is a department within the college's Division of Health Sciences. The center, located at 2207 E. Wyoming St., is open from 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. for students and 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. for faculty, staff and community-rate families Mondays-Fridays in the fall and spring semesters. The center serves children 18 months-to-five years of age, and the center team is currently accepting names for fall childcare enrollment. Services are available to students, faculty, staff, and community members. Contact the center staff at (210) 486-2500 or visit the St. Philip's College Child Development Center online for details.
