SPC in Time Capsule

When a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) member institution in Delaware preserved and celebrated its history less than a week ago, a bit of HBCU member institution St. Philip's College (SPC) was part of the celebration.

The HBCU in Delaware is Delaware State University (DSU) on DuPont Highway in the State of Delaware. The sharing of history is the result of a congratulatory certificate from 119-year-old SPC congratulating the university on its 125th year of operation and signed by college president Dr. Adena Williams Loston.

The certificate from SPC was part of a time capsule ceremonially earthed in a Sept. 14 interment ceremony by guests that included DSU students and the Mayor of Dover. DSU was founded in 1891 and SPC was founded in 1898. Contents of the 2017 certificate from SPC, along with letters of congratulation from the City of Dover, Delaware Sen. Tom Carper and Delaware Gov. John Carney---in addition to copies of the Delaware General Assembly’s 2016 resolution apologizing for the slavery and Jim Crow periods in the state---will be see the light of day in 50 years (2067).

Most of the Alamo Colleges District colleges have either earthed or unearthed time capsules containing unique artifacts in similar events for similar purposes in their service lives. A 50-year time capsule at SPC was prematurely unearthed to accommodate urgent construction of a $49 million multipurpose academic complex that was funded at the college as part of a $450 million bond package approved by voters in Nov. 2005 to both construct new Alamo College facilities and renovate existing college buildings.

Delaware State University's main location is in Dover, yet DSU offers courses throughout the state of Delaware---the nation’s northernmost southern state---densely populated and roughly the size of the SPC service area.
