REQUIRED BROWSER

Getting the right browser and setting it up correctly is critical to your success with online coursework.

Mozilla Firefox is the browser of choice and is at the top of our recommended list of browsers when using ACES. If you do not have Firefox it is free to download and easy to install and use.

Firefox 10, Safari, and Chrome DO NOT fully support all of the features you will use in ACES. For example, you may not see certain radio buttons when taking a quiz in one of these browsers.

Check your Browser here

Current Internet Browser for PC and Mac
Download Firefox. Note the system requirements for the latest version of Firefox.

Download Internet Explorer 9

Chrome is NOT recommended because all ACES functionality may not be available.

REQUIRED SOFTWARE

Many online courses require that you open handouts in PDF format. You will need Adobe Acrobat.

Download Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Some online courses may require you to submit assignments that are best competed using word processing software. For example, Microsoft Word, Word Perfect, Open Office (see your college bookstore for educational pricing). Your instructor will provide you with specifics.

POP-UP BLOCKER DISABLED

ACES relies on new windows "popping up" while you are in your course. You must have "pop-up" blockers disabled in your browser to use this site. See below for how to disable your pop-up blocker.

Empty Browser Cache

What is a browser cache?

Your web browser downloads and stores files from websites you visit in order to allow the web pages to load faster when you revisit them. This is called "caching". It means that if new data has been added to the webpages, your browser cached pages won't display the data until the cache has been "refreshed".

So, to resolve this problem of getting old data instead of new, you should periodically clear the browser cache in order for your browser to function more efficiently and also display the latest information to you for the site you are viewing. This is especially important for students in ACES as instructors are making changes in your course frequently - such as grading assignments, updating content, and posting to discussion forums.
