Northeast Lakeview College Phi Theta Kappa Students Receive Prestigious Terry Foundation Scholarship
Combined the students will receive more than $90K to continue their education

Tanae Cherron Nious and Jake Torres, Northeast Lakeview College students, have been awarded the prestigious Terry Scholarship and combined, the students will receive more than $90K to continue their education. The Terry Foundation’s mission is to improve and develop the State of Texas by assisting Texas students to attend the state’s finest public universities. The Foundation hopes that these students will have a significant impact on the future leadership of the state and nation. Students receiving funds from the Terry Foundation attend one of thirteen partnering public Texas universities. Both Nious and Torres were very involved in the NLC Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the academic honor society for students attending a community or junior college.

Tanae Cherron Nious received her associate of art degree in 2017 and will be transferring to Texas Women’s University to pursue a degree in Social Work. She received the Terry Transfer Scholarship and will receive $40,500 ($13,500) over three years. Her future plans are to graduate with my BSW, then immediately begin working on my MSW at TWU and her ultimate goal is to become a school social worker to help disadvantaged youth.

Jake Torres is a 2017 Northeast Lakeview College graduate and will attend University of Texas at San Antonio to study Business Administration. His ultimate goals include completing his MBA as well as an internship in Business Administration to help him prepare for future employment. Jake received $50,100 from the Terry Foundation.

In addition to the $90K these students received from the Terry Foundation, they received $10K in other scholarships, including the Humana Foundation, Phi Theta Kappa, and more.

Tanae Nious says, “Make the best of your college experience while it lasts. What you put into it this experience is exactly what you will get from it.”

Jake Torres says, “Make sure to stay focused, have hope, and don’t give up because you can do it as long as you set your mind to it.”
