A Future Social Worker’s Story: Nohely’s Passion for Advocacy and Support
Nohely chose to continue her education through the Alamo Colleges because she knew she would find a welcoming and supportive environment—one where she wouldn’t feel out of place as a single mother returning to school. Her academic goals include earning an Associate of Applied Science in Community Health at Northwest Vista College and then transferring to a four-year university to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
On a personal level, Nohely is focused on continuing her journey of healing, growth, and resilience after experiencing significant challenges recently in her life. As the single parent of a child who requires specialized medical care, financial assistance is essential. Being able to meet her son’s medical needs—without having to choose which procedures or medications to prioritize—provides her with a sense of security and stability. This support allows her to be fully present for her son, not only when he needs her, but also when he simply wants her by his side.
Her journey has been shaped by the guidance of community health workers, social workers, and patient advocates who helped her navigate the complex process of accessing medical and financial resources. Their support demonstrated how vital these roles are in helping families who feel overwhelmed by the healthcare system, and this experience inspired her own academic and career path.
"I’ve been the survivor. And now I am working to be the thriver that inspires and encourages others to keep on going as they strive toward their goals of stability, security, and most importantly, safety!”
Because of this, Nohely is committed to giving back. After completing her associate degree and gaining experience in the field, she plans to continue her education—either by pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Community Health or a Master’s degree in Social Work. Her goal is to help bridge gaps in access and support others in the same meaningful way she once received.
Nohely is the proud recipient of the San Antonio Women’s Chamber of Commerce Foundation Scholarship. This scholarship honors non-traditional students and is designed to support them beyond the classroom—empowering and uplifting them as they grow into strong community leaders.
