From Determination to Degree: Vanessa Vega’s Path to Social Work
Born and raised in New Braunfels, Texas, Vanessa Vega embodies resilience, bravery, and determination. A full-time employee, devoted mother of three, and part-time college student, Vanessa is pursuing her Associate of Arts in Social Work with plans to transfer to The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) to complete her Bachelor’s degree.
Vanessa’s path to social work was inspired by those who once helped her through a life-changing period. “If it wasn’t for social workers, I wouldn’t have made it as far as I have,” she reflects. Experiencing the impact of their care firsthand motivated her to pursue a career where she can empower others to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
Her journey took a pivotal turn after a conversation with her eldest daughter. When her daughter asked where she had gone to college, Vanessa realized it was time to finish what she had started years ago. “It was never too late to lead by example and show my children the power of perseverance,” she reflects.
"This scholarship is an investment in my future and the future of my family. It allows me to focus more on my studies and less on overworking to make ends meet."
Receiving the GED Empowerment to College Endowed Scholarship has given Vanessa financial relief and encouragement to keep moving forward.
With her unwavering determination, Vanessa is transforming hardship into hope — not only for herself, but for the countless lives she will touch as a future social worker.
