Dr. Alan Cottrell
As Dean of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Alan Cottrell leads the academic programming and affairs for the College and guides the faculty in their provision of excellence in our students’ educational experience. An award-winning teacher, he has taught as both a full-time and an adjunct faculty member and has worked at eight different colleges/universities over the past twenty-five years. As an academic administrator, he previously served as Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts, and as Associate Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey. A past National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow and recipient of multiple internationally-competitive grants and fellowships, he is a published scholar. His research concerns the intellectual history of the Middle Ages and Italian Renaissance, with a focus on the history of classical scholarship and learning, as well as a strong background in Classics.
He holds a B.A. degree from Baylor University in History and Greek, and he earned his Ph.D. degree in History from the University of Texas at Austin. A native of San Antonio, TX, he has also lived in Missouri, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and New Jersey, as well as Rome and Florence, Italy. He has taken students to Europe in past years and encourages all students to study a world language, travel to other places, meet other people, and live with a true sense of discovery and wonder in today’s global society.
