Former Brightwood College Students Completing Training At The Alamo Colleges

February 18, 2019

The Alamo Colleges District’s Workforce Training Network (WTN) is currently providing training for allied health students displaced by the closing of the for-profit Brightwood College last December.

With support from the district’s Health Professions Opportunity Grant program and its Westside Education and Training Center, 11 former Brightwood students are now working to complete their medical assistant certificate program. A cohort of medical billing and coding certification students who are just shy a few courses will begin their training at Alamo Colleges in the near future.

"We believe in student success and want to offer the opportunity for the allied health students of Brightwood College to complete their certificate programs with us,” said Alamo Colleges District Chancellor Dr. Mike Flores. "Brightwood students that were on a diploma track can come in and receive an individual evaluation of their transcript. We will work with them to create a plan of study and discuss options to complete their training track. We have the resources and flexibility to customize their training so they may complete their allied health certificate programs,” he added.

When Brightwood ceased operations in December, the Alamo Colleges District, through a concerted effort with the program director at Brightwood, WTN, the district financial aid office and representatives from the five Alamo Colleges District colleges, immediately organized two information sessions for the displaced Brightwood students in order to respond to their needs as  quickly as possible.

The Alamo Colleges District WTN offers non-degree courses, certificates, and industry-specific certifications. The Alamo Colleges District also is offering help to former Brightwood students who are seeking to complete an associate degree.
