District Celebration Of Excellence Showcases Baldrige Award
April 16, 2019
A festive crowd of dignitaries, community members and Alamo Colleges District trustees and employees gathered recently at the Pearl Stable for the Celebration of Excellence, a Fiesta-themed event highlighting the district’s distinction of being the only community college in the nation to win the 2018 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award! Guests entered to the triumphant sound of the Southwest ISD Legacy High School mariachis before Chancellor Dr. Mike Flores began the program by welcoming the guests and introducing Board Chair Marcelo Casillas, who offered congratulations on behalf of the board. The actual award, a scintillating crystal sculpture, occupied the center of the stage.
Other speakers included Bexar County Commissioner Justin Rodriguez, Mayor Ron Nirenberg, Richard Perez, president/CEO of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce; Diana S. Sanchez, president/CEO of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Ramiro Cavazos, president/CEO of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Richard Gambitta, chief of staff for State Representative Leo Pacheco, delivered congratulatory remarks on his behalf.
Adding an even more celebratory note, Miss Fiesta 2019, Victoria Gonzalez, in her full Fiesta regalia, unveiled the Alamo Colleges District’s first Fiesta medal, while student volunteers distributed them to the guests. Dr. Flores shared a short Baldrige video with those gathered, as well as the story of the district’s Baldrige journey, and he thanked all those whose hard work and dedication helped the district to win the nation’s highest award for performance excellence.
