Alamo Colleges District Named Finalist For Seal Of Excelencia
May 23, 2019
After a rigorous application process, the Alamo Colleges District has been selected as a finalist for Excelencia in Education’s inaugural Seal of Excelencia!
The district is one of only four Texas community college institutions to be selected as a finalist. All five of the colleges of the Alamo Colleges District—San Antonio College, St. Philip’s College, Palo Alto College, Northwest Vista College and Northeast Lakeview College—collaborated on the application for the Seal of Excelencia.
“We are proud to be a finalist for this prestigious recognition,” said Alamo Colleges District Chancellor Dr. Mike Flores. “This honor reflects our commitment to ‘serving our diverse communities for success,’ which is, in fact, our mission, and the fact that 63% of our students are Hispanic,” he added. “It is also relevant to note that all of our colleges except Northeast Lakeview College are recognized as Hispanic-Serving Institutions.
The Excelencia Seal team reviewed applications submitted for the following elements:
- Alignment of data and practice in serving Latino students
- Strategies and practices that have been institutionalized in serving Latino students
- Evidence of effectiveness and intentionality in institutional practices in serving Latino students
According to the Excelencia in Education team, in reviewing the Alamo Colleges District’s application, our commitment to serving Latino students is clear. Identifying finalists among strong applications required an even more critical review of integrated elements throughout the institution that set a strong national model for what all institutions can do to intentionally serve Latino students while serving all.
The nation’s leading organization for accelerating Latino student success, Excelencia in Education created The Seal of Excelencia to serve as a voluntary certification system that recognizes higher education institutions that employ evidence-based practices, maintain strong data systems, and have leadership committed to serving the needs of Latino students. The initiative is aimed at significantly increasing the number of Latino students attaining college degrees by 2030. For more information, visit: www.EdExcelencia.org.
The Seal of Excelencia is the first-ever initiative to credential higher education institutions based on leadership, evidence-based practices, and use of data to ensure Latino student success. The Seal also serves to assist Latino students in making postsecondary education choices that will best serve their educational goals.
For institutions, the Seal will help promote the use of proven strategies that support greater Latino student success and drive change in a collaborative and comprehensive manner, offering both technical assistance and access to data from Excelencia’s network. For potential students, the Seal will offer important new information about colleges and universities that can help them better choose where to pursue their higher education.
At the Alamo Colleges District, high quality education and affordable costs provide exceptional value to students and alumni who are major contributors to the economy and culture of our community. For more information, go to alamo.edu.
