At a special meeting on April 17, the Alamo Colleges District Board of Trustees selected Northeast Lakeview College (NLC) student Alejandra Gomez as the new student trustee.

The Alamo Colleges District is one of the few community college systems in the state with a student trustee. Gomez will serve a one-year term, beginning May 1, 2019 and running through April 30, 2020.

“We appreciate the outstanding service to the Alamo Colleges of our previous student trustee, Monica Scraper," said Alamo Colleges District Chancellor Dr. Mike Flores. "We look forward to the valuable contributions Ms. Gomez will make as the voice of students on our board," he added.

Gomez plans to earn an associate degree in teaching and hopes to continue her education at Texas State University, where she plans to earn her teaching degree and become a teacher for life skills and special needs students. She is an active member of the NLC Student Government Association ands serves as an NLC Performing Arts Club officer. She volunteers as a choreographer for NLC Nighthawks Dance Cardio events and at Lone Star Elementary in New Braunfels and is involved with musical and improv performances at the local Overtime Theater.

"Growing up, my mom ran a daycare center from our home, and later went on to teach preschool,” said Gomez. "I saw her passion for the children she taught, and it really inspired me to pursue teaching. In high school, I started volunteering with students in life skills and special needs classes. The wonderful students I had the opportunity to work with ultimately inspired me to become a teacher for life skills and special needs. My plan, after graduating, is to be a teacher in the San Antonio area,” she added.

Gomez' goals as student trustee are to represent the students from every college of the Alamo Colleges District on the board, to communicate updates and information from the board to the student body on a regular basis and to motivate her fellow students to become involved and participate in activities and organizations at their college and within the community.

Alamo Colleges District – Palo Alto College student Dale Sampson was named as an alternate student trustee. He will attend board meetings if Gomez is unable to do so.
