SAISD Students Sign Up For AlamoPROMISE At Save Your Seat Event

October 22, 2019

The rollout of AlamoPROMISE continued on October 21 with a high-energy Alamo Colleges/SAISD Save Your Seat event at SAISD’s Alamo Convocation Center.

Hundreds of students from SAISD high schools arrived by the busload to the celebratory sounds of the Jefferson High School drumline, along with cheerleaders and spirit teams from several other high schools and greetings from high school and Alamo Colleges’ college mascots. Emcee Anna Trevino began the speaking program by introducing SAISD Superintendent Pedro Martinez, who welcomed the students, parents and others in attendance and expressed SAISD’s excitement at being involved in AlamoPROMISE.

He was followed by Alamo Colleges District Board Chair Marcelo Casillas, who brought greetings and praise for the program from the Alamo Colleges board. Next, Alamo Colleges Chancellor Dr. Mike Flores greeting the gathering and presented a summary of AlamoPROMISE, reminding students that “AlamoPROMISE is our promise to support you in every way possible, in terms of not only your academic needs, but needs for food assistance, transportation and mental health resources. AlamoPROMISE says to you, our prospective, current and future students, ‘We have confidence in your ability to succeed, and we and our partners in AlamoPROMISE are committed to investing in your success.’”

Following Dr. Flores, Fox Tech student Deja Hernandez related how AlamoPROMISE will benefit her and other high school students. Then Ms. Trevino spoke about AlamoPROMISE in light of her experiences advising high schools students and her cousin’s experiences as a freshman at SAC. She then gave a “Call to Action” for the students present to sign up online immediately at the tables around the space staffed by representatives from each of the five Alamo Colleges District colleges or in the Mobile GO Center parked just outside. More than 300 enthusiastic students signed up to Save Their Seat at one of the colleges in fall 2020, while the drumline, cheerleaders and spirit teams urged them on. Save Your Seat events will continue throughout October at the participating high schools across the city.
