The Alamo Colleges District invites students to apply to serve as the 2020-2021 Student Trustee.

The Student Trustee serves as an advisor to the Board and is a liaison between the students and the Board of Trustees and Chancellor, while gaining leadership experience and ensuring that students participate in district governance. The Student Trustee’s main goal is to represent student interests.

The student trustee is expected to support the Alamo Colleges District mission to empower our diverse communities for success and should commit to full participation at board meetings held approximately twice a month. The Student Trustee also has the opportunity to attend pre-approved conferences, advocacy trips, and other activities and events. Travel allowance/reimbursement is received at the same rate established for other Trustees.

The time commitment can be substantial, but many student trustee activities are dependent on the student’s schedule.

Eligible students are encouraged to apply to their home college. Each of the five colleges will then submit a nominee to the Board of Trustees. The Student Trustee receives a $300 scholarship at the beginning of each Fall and Spring semester of his/her year of service, for a total of $600 scholarship in recognition of the time spent as a trustee. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2020. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be currently enrolled in one of the Alamo Colleges and maintain enrollment in at least six credit hours during the election period and throughout the Student Trustee’s term of office (Summer enrollment is optional)
  • Be working toward an Alamo Colleges District degree or certificate and not be eligible to or actually graduate/complete until their term on the board will end

  • Not hold earned college degrees or certificates beyond high school diploma/GED
     
  • Have and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5

  • Demonstrate service commitment at their college and/or in the community

  • Submit a personal essay concerning the Student Trustee’s reasons for wishing to serve

  • Commit to taking Principle-Centered Leadership training within 60 days of being selected as Student Trustee

Each Student Government Association (“SGA”) will, through application screening and interviews, select a candidate who meets these criteria (one per college). These student candidates will be submitted to the Board of Trustees, which will interview the candidates, consult with the administration and select one primary Student Trustee and one alternate Student Trustee. If for any reason the SGA of an individual college is not staffed or functioning sufficiently to perform these duties, then the college president may designate another appropriate campus organization to do so.

Nov. 25 – Open for applications

Jan. 16  – Preferred Deadline

Feb. 1 –  Student Trustee Application Deadline by 5 p.m.

Feb. 2 – SGA application review and interviews  

Feb. 28 – Student Trustee Candidates submitted to the Board (one candidate per college) 

March – Board of Trustees application review/interview process

April – Student Trustee selected by the Board at its regular meetings or at a Special Meeting

April – Student Trustees (Trustee and alternate) sworn in at Regular Board meeting after an election

May 1 – Student Trustee begins term and serves one year (May 1, 2020 – April 30, 2021)
