Alamo Colleges Board of Trustees Selects Martin As New Student Trustee
May 28, 2020
At a special meeting on May 26, 2020, the Alamo Colleges District Board of Trustees selected St. Philip’s College (SPC) student Darius Martin as the new student trustee.
The Alamo Colleges District is one of the few community college systems in the state with a student trustee. Martin will serve a one-year term, beginning May 27, 2020 and running through April 30, 2021.
“We appreciate the outstanding service to the Alamo Colleges of our previous student trustee, Alejandra Gomez, who excelled at representing the district across the college and in the community," said Alamo Colleges District Chancellor Dr. Mike Flores. "We look forward to the valuable contributions Mr. Martin will make as the voice of students on our board," he added.
Martin is a freshman at SPC studying business administration. He plans to transfer to a university upon graduation. He is an active member of the Collegiate 100, has maintained a 4.0 GPA and works part-time with the Boys and Girls Club of San Antonio.
“I am excited about the opportunity to serve as the district student trustee because the position will help me develop as a leader and professional and allow me to represent my fellow students,” said Martin. “My willingness to listen will be my hallmark,” he added.
Martin plans to visit each college and speak with students there, especially the members of the Student Government Association. He is committed to communicating with all students about what actions the board of trustees takes and developing two-way communication between student and the board.
Northeast Lakeview College student Morgan Varela was named as the alternate student trustee. She will attend board meetings if Martin is unable to do so.
