The Alamo Colleges and its students have always been generously supported by our community. In this season of giving, community members will have a special opportunity to help Alamo Colleges’ students who are struggling, as so many are, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Saturday, December 5, beginning at noon, the 13th annual Fabulous GED Brunch will take place virtually to raise funds for the Alamo Colleges’ Foundation’s Student Impact Fund. This fund provides emergency resources for students at any of the five Alamo Colleges who need temporary help to:

  • Buy groceries
  • Pay rent, housing or utility bills
  • Access technology to support remote learning
  • Pay healthcare and childcare expenses

This year’s special guests will be Most Reverend Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller, M.Sp.S., Mayor Ron Nirenberg, keynote speaker San Antonio Express-News columnist Elaine Ayala and Alamo Colleges Chancellor Dr. Mike Flores. The GED Brunch was founded by Martha Tijerina, who still leads the approximately 70 leadership committee members and also serves on the board of the Alamo Colleges Foundation, which partners with the group for the event. In past years, the brunch brought together approximately 700 individuals for a fun and festive holiday gathering. It is the single largest fundraiser benefiting students across the Alamo Colleges each year,. In this very different year, even though the event is virtual, the fun and festive nature will be imaginatively recreated online.

Ayala, Metro columnist for the San Antonio Express-News and a newspaper journalist for almost 40 years, has held a variety of positions, including news reporter, features editor, blogger and editorial page editor. She has worked for six metropolitan dailies — the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, the Arizona Daily Star, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer, the Austin American-Statesman, El Paso Times and the Express-News, where she has worked since 1996. Her column appears on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays on Page 2 of the Express-News. She covers San Antonio and Bexar County with a special focus on communities of color, demographic change, Latino politics, migration, education and arts and culture.

The San Antonio native graduated from Memorial High School on the city’s West Side and the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in English. She is also a graduate of the Maynard Institute’s Editing Program, in which she also taught. Ayala is the recipient of several awards, including the Henry Guerra Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Journalism, awarded by San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists. She has been inducted into the Edgewood Independent School District’s Hall of Fame, the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame and, most recently, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists’ Hall of Fame.

In past years, the event has supported the Palo Alto College Adult Learning Academy, which houses the college’s GED program and works with students to prepare them to take their high school equivalency test. In its 13 years, the event has raised over $667,000 to benefit local GED students. In addition, $109,000 of the funds raised were used to found a GED Empowerment to College Endowment Scholarship for GED students who enroll at any of the five Alamo Colleges.
