Healthcare Apprenticeship Program Leads Students Right into Jobs
May 17, 2021
The Alamo Colleges is partnering with Methodist Healthcare for the Patient Care Technician (PCT) apprenticeship program, which is part of the district’s Healthcare Apprentice Partnership grant the Department of Labor that focuses on starting healthcare apprenticeships in San Antonio.
As of April 26, three cohorts of nine apprentices each have been accepted into the program. Out of the first two cohorts, 14 who completed the program are currently employed by Methodist Healthcare as a patient care technician. Cohort 4 began training May 3 with 11 participants and recruiting and screening for cohort 5, which begins June 14, is underway.
The next cohort begins September 13. The 27 apprentices were selected from 65 who applied. Since the selection process is very competitive and all apprentices are full-time Methodist Health employees, a relatively small number are accepted into the program.
To make it possible for participants to apply as early as possible and to recruit more qualified candidates, especially those currently enrolled in a certified nursing aide (CNA) or PCT program, eligibility includes individuals who are registry or certification eligible. Successful completion of the program includes passing the licensure exam.
Current students and graduates of the Alamo Colleges’ CNA and PCT programs can apply, along with students from other CNA and PCT training programs. Eligible candidates must have authorization to work in the U.S. and be over 17 years old.
The partnership is a result of the Department of Labor’s Closing the Skills Gap grant that awarded $1 million to Alamo Colleges to expand healthcare apprenticeships in the San Antonio area.
The Healthcare Apprentice Partnership grant focuses on creating apprenticeships with healthcare employer partners in nine occupations – PCTs, CNAs, surgical technicians, pharmacy technicians, medical records technicians, medical billing and coding, medical assistants, community health workers and radiology technicians.
