NLC Government Instructor Receives Prestigious AACOG Award

Northeast Lakeview College congratulates Sabrina Hammel for receiving the Regional Citizen of the Year Award from Alamo Area Council of Government (AACOG).  She was nominated by Commissioner Tommy Calvert for service work within the local community.  One such project is the annual cleanup event she coordinates at Montgomery Elementary.  She is also the lead faculty member for service learning at Northeast Lakeview College.  Hammel’s “Spirit of Renewal”  is a community outreach project that provides trash collection services, including bulk pick-up to an unincorporated part of Bexar County that lacks basic community services.  Other community support services are also on hand at the event to such as health services, the public library, the San Antonio Food Bank and more.  Montgomery Elementary is in Commissioner Calvert’s service area and he has attended several of the events. The Spirit of Renewal Project, led by Sabrina Hammel, is coordinated by Northeast Lakeview College service learning students, and the NLC chapter of National Society for Leadership and Success (NSLS).

About the Award: The Regional Citizen of the Year Award honors individuals who have contributed to the betterment of the AACOG region. The award is given to individuals residing within the Alamo Region who demonstrate a dedication to the region through their activities outside the scope of their employment. Any person, corporation, community project, or government regional project that has contributed to the significant positive advancement of the region and/or any communities in the thirteen counties of the Alamo Area (Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, McMullen, Medina, and Wilson counties) is eligible for nomination. Current elected officials and public sector employees are ineligible for nomination unless directly involved in a governmental regional project.
