SMART START: First Day Counts
Attendance has a significant impact on performance, and attendance during the first week is integral to student success. Regular and punctual attendance in all classes is required. Student absences should be recorded from the first day. If a student does not attend class at least once during the first week of class, they should be dropped from the class.
Midterm Grades and Early Alert
As part of our commitment to student success, all students in all classes should have a midterm grade posted in ACES at the appropriate time (based on length of course). This grade is immediately available for students to view.
Consequences for Missing Grades
As part of our responsibility for student success, we need to provide grades to our students in a timely manner. There are now consequences for missing grades:
- Adjuncts may lose the opportunity to teach, and
- Full-time faculty may lose overload assignments for one or more semesters.
Additionally, as part of our Early Alert system, we are asking for information on students enrolled in 16-week and/or Flex 2 courses. This is the Progress Report email with a link to GradesFirst where you report 4 pieces of information: current grade, total number of absences to date, at-risk y/n, and comments.
Final Grades are due at the end of each semester. Faculty who fail to submit grades by the due date my be disciplined by the college. You cannot assign a final grade of W in ACES if it’s after the last date to drop, or if the student has exceeded their 6-drop limit.
When recording final course grades, include the “Last Date of Attendance” for any student earning an F.
This is required for federal financial aid reporting. Please also be sure that any students who have been dropped (either by you or through Admissions and Records) also have a Last Date of Attendance filled in.
