Alamo Colleges District Board Approves New Vice President for Academic Success for Northwest Vista College
San Antonio, TX - On March 19, 2019, the Alamo Colleges District Board of Trustees approved Dr. Daniel T. Powell for the position of Vice President for Academic Success (VPAS) at Alamo Colleges - Northwest Vista College (NVC). He replaces Dr. Amy Whitworth who decided to return to teaching in January and currently serves as tenured faculty at San Antonio College.
Dr. Powell has 13 years of experience as an academic administrator in various dean and chair positions, most recently at Laramie County Community College, Chipola College and Straz Center for the Performing Arts Patel Conservatory. He successfully completed the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) John E. Roueche Future Leaders Institute, which enhances leadership skills in advocating the mission of community colleges, understanding governance, policy, and legislation, using data, managing foundational aspects of the institution and creating a culture around diversity, equity and inclusion.
Dr. Powell has a Doctor of Music in Saxophone Performance from Florida State University and a Master of Music in Saxophone Performance from Arizona State University. He also has Master in Business Administration from Troy University and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from West Texas A&M University. Additional certifications include Arts Administration and College Teaching Certificate.
“Dr. Powell is an experienced administrator with a strong leadership background in assessing and strengthening curriculum development and academic quality, advancing competency-based learning, improving program marketing, recruitment, and retention and developing and implementing strategic action plans,” said NVC President Dr. Ric Neal Baser.
“He also has a strong background in facilitating articulations and fundraising for the arts, having successfully collaborated on a multi-year initiative to raise $14 million for a fine and performing arts renovation and expansion project. He is a tenured professor who has worked in various settings at the college level and in Texas public schools, and we are thrilled to have him join our NVC family,” added Dr. Baser.
