NVC Among Top 25 Community Colleges for Hispanics

(Feb. 28, 2022) SAN ANTONIO — Northwest Vista College ranks high in several categories on the list for Top 25 Community Colleges for Hispanics by Hispanic Outlook on Education Magazine, released in the February/March issue.

NVC is a Hispanic Serving Institution and has a current Hispanic enrollment of 64 percent, which is an increase from 57% in 2014.

Hispanic Outlook magazine said over the past year, community colleges have faced enormous challenges as they navigate a pandemic at the same time as they strive to provide their students – who are frequently first-generation learners, full or part-time workers, single parents and minorities – with the best opportunities for improving their skills and moving forward in their careers.

“The high rankings – especially the number of associate degrees earned by Hispanic and Latino/a students at NVC – is the result of the collaborative work of NVC faculty and staff,” said NVC President Dr. Ric Baser. “We know many of our students are juggling life challenges and we want to support them in their academic journey with wrap-around services,” he added.

Some of those opportunities NVC implemented over the past several years include a Student Advocacy & Resource Center that assists students with finding emergency aid, access to food banks, counseling, referral services and other life needs. NVC has also received several nationally-funded grants that will help students. These grants are focused on underserved communities and are STEM related, environmentally-focused, and technology/IT targeted to help students connect to in-demand careers.
