Why did you choose NVC and what do you like about it?
I chose NVC because of the many classes offered and the assistance and care that come from the staff members and community. I love the involvement with the fine arts building with showcasing student work, group projects, and shows.
Describe your background. What made you decide to be an artist?
I decided I needed to be an artist because I love to tell stories through motion and images. I grew up moving to many places, often smaller towns. I met many people who had such interesting stories and soon found that they added to my own story. I already work part of my dream job(s) as a part-time as freelance illustrator and character designer.
Which classes or faculty members impacted your work and your life?
My favorite class of the two semesters I have been attending NVC has to be Delgado's Design class. He was able to give us that artistic liberty while giving the educational structure. I enjoyed class critiques as it helped me be able to ask for more help, become inspired by others' work and become closer with my peers.
Describe your work’s concept, aesthetic, and your process of making it.
When I first think of making a piece, I like to base it off one of my own photography pieces. I love to choose something with contrast and bright colors. I am not intrigued by drawing the picture itself but by the colors it takes to mix and how I can use the colors I have to create a new one.
Which artists inspire and/or influence you the most and why?
I love Charles M. Schulz, the cartoonist of Peanuts. His work shows motion and characteristics in actions that I dream of showcasing myself. But, when it comes to more realistic pieces, I can look around at the light that bounces off everyday objects and others' faces.
What kind of plans do you have set for your future as an artist? Are you planning to pursue a Bachelor's degree?
I plan to pursue a Bachelor's degree in studio art: drawing and painting with a certificate in education for high school art education. To fulfill these plans, I am transferring to the University of North Texas. After my education, I would love to be a high school art teacher with a small job as an illustrator.
