In the spirit of #keepsinging and #Alamotogether, the Northwest Vista College Music program in the Fine & Performing Arts department will host several virtual events for Spring 2021.

NVC MUSIC ALUMNI TALK SERIES
“Conducting 101 and Beyond”NVC Music Alumni, Christian N. Cruz is attending Texas State University to pursue a Master of Music in Choral Conducting. Currently he is a graduate assistant of Choral Activities under Dr. Craig Hella Johnson and Dr. Jonathan Babcock. NVC Music is excited to launch the premiere NVC Music Alumni Talk Series this Spring semester. As an educator and artist, Mr. Cruz will share his musical journey since obtaining an associate of arts degree in music from Northwest Vista College. Dr. Minkyung Lee is launching this NVC Music Alumni Talk Series to offer networking opportunities to students who have plans for a career in music after graduating from NVC. Christian will lecture about Conducting 101 and Beyond to help young singers to embark on a career as a music educator/performer.

Christian N. Cruz is a San Antonio native, and active music educator, conductor, and collaborative artist having taught in church, community, private, and charter school settings. As an educator and artist, Christian promotes collaboration from other art forms to compliment choral music with singers ranging from beginning to professional musicians. Christian's research/specific area of study is sacred liturgical music, with a concentration on the promotion of effective sacred music programs in the private school education system.
Along with teaching and conducting, Christian is an active singer having performed in Central and East Texas. In 2013, Christian made his countertenor debut with the San Antonio Choral Society as the soloist for Bernstein's Chichester Psalms and in 2019 made his debut with Bach Society Houston in their eight-singer performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion.
Christian holds an associate of arts degree in liberal arts/music from Northwest Vista College (#GoWildcats) and a Bachelor's of Music degree in Choral Music Education from Sam Houston State University (#EatEmUp). He is currently pursuing his master's of music in Choral Conducting at Texas State University and is excited to begin the collaborative process with faculty and students. #GoBobcats

NVC Virtual Honors Recital
Spring Music in the Air
Dr. Minkyung Lee is excited to host the NVC virtual honors recital for students who have been selected because they have gone above and beyond in their studies for this special recital showcase. Students will virtually perform famous musical theatre solos and ensembles. The group of soloists and ensemble singers will feature the most thrilling, ever-popular musical theatre repertoires. Special thanks to Dr. Bogum Park, piano, for sharing her amazing talent and tremendous work in support of our NVC singers.

Dr. Bogum Park is an active professional collaborative pianist in the United States. She has performed as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. She completed her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Collaborative Piano at the University of Texas at Austin, Butler School of Music in 2020 after earned two Master of Music degrees in Collaborative Piano from UT Austin in 2018 with Prof. Anne Epperson and Dr. Colette Valentine, and also in Piano Performance from UT Austin with Prof. Nancy Garrett and Prof. David Renner. She received a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance at the Yonsei University, South Korea in 2013. Dr. Park has received many prestigious scholarships and award at UT Austin such as Sidney Wright Award and scholarship for Excellence in Piano Accompanying once she won 1st prize at the Sidney M. Wright Piano Competition at UT Austin in 2016.
Dr. Park has had numerous repertories as she was working as a teaching assistant at UT Austin, performed a plenty of recitals with vocalists, string players, wind players, chamber group, university chorus, and wind ensemble. In addition, Dr. Park has been a professional competition accompanist, as she has performed a plenty of competitions such as National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition, Texas Young Artist Competition, Austin Civic Orchestra Competition and so on.

NVC Spring Solos and Ensemble Concert
Invitation: Stage to Screen
Northwest Vista College proudly presents Chamber Singers, directed and conducted virtually by Dr. Minkyung Lee with an amazing partner, Dr. Bogum Park, on piano. Invitation: Stage to Screen by Dr. Lee and outstanding soloists from NVC Music Program, is extending an invitation to friends and families who cannot join us on the stage. To celebrate the final week of school in the Spring semester, NVC Chamber Singers will have a watch party to view the final product of their virtual performance. Along with amazing music by outstanding soloists, Vista’s exciting Chamber Singers will present some of the most beautiful and heartfelt songs, including Not One Falls, Homeward Bound, a well-crafted arrangement of two of Clara Schumann’s most renowned solo art songs, Sie liebten sich beide and Warum willst du and’re fragen, and Just Sing from Trolls World Tour, to celebrate togetherness as an anthem for choir advocacy.

Texoma Region Musical Theatre Audition Preparation
Outstanding singers from NVC Music will participate in the virtual Texoma Region Musical Theatre Audition this spring semester. This audition is part of the National Student Auditions (NSA) process and the top five winners in each category will move forward to the National YouTube Round. Selected singers will be participating in the masterclass led by Dr. Minkyung Lee, to learn the expectations as they audition for musical theatre productions and to showcase their abilities for maximum results in preparation for this virtual competition.

NATS South Texas Spring Audition Participation
Dr. Minkyung Lee will participate in an online audition for NATS South Texas Chapter with selected singers from the NVC Music department this March. By participating in a competition organized by NATS, students have a new opportunity to show their talents and invest extra hours of hard works towards competition preparation. Dr. Lee will serve as an active judge for this event. Selected singers will be participating in the masterclass to learn the expectations and requirements, through a review of their singing videos as they audition for this virtual singing competition, and by showcasing their abilities for maximum results. The results of this virtual singing competition will be announced on Saturday, April 10, 2021.

“Some thoughts on Schumann’s Dichterliebe”
NVC Music is thrilled to invite Professor Joachim Reinhuber from Texas A&M University-Kingsville. A native German, Dr. Reinhuber has been serving as the head of piano studies since 2008. His lecture will cover the song interpretation of “Dichterliebe (A Poet’s Love)” by Robert Schumann. Based on his numerous performances with many different vocalists, Dr. Reinhuber will share thoughts on the meaning and interpretation of this song cycle which may not be found in standard textbooks. He will be conducting a master class for selected singers who will refine their singers’ diction in Lieder (German Art Songs) to improve their competitiveness at the NATS South Texas Spring Online Audition in March.
