To meet the goals of the grant, PAC had identified several high priority needs and proposed four major
Professional development to educate STEM faculty regarding how to integrate problem-based learning into courses to improve instruction. Creation of a PBL (Problem Based Learning) clearinghouse/exchange provides professional development, instructional innovation and assessment.
Implement the Intrusive Academic and Career Advising/Planning Program (IACAPI) in order to provide comprehensive student support in STEM advising areas.
Through the grant, the IACAPI initiative: expands advising services for STEM students, supports the Student Success Coaching Program for STEM courses, and offers the Summer STEM Experience to entering Freshmen.
The involvement of intrusive advising has encouraged students to pursue STEM job pathways as well as track student progress, retention and completion. The program provides needed interventions, such as direct coaching for students struggling with coursework. Extensive Tutoring Services through Academic Learning Centers/Labs are available at PAC.
Expansion of the Science Exploration Laboratory & Interpretive Center to create new educational opportunities in green jobs areas.
With funding support of the grant, an installation of a biofiltation system that treats water run-off and discharge into the Center's garden labs was created. An Acequias Feature and Demonstration Classroom was also created to collect rainwater and convey the water throughout the Center.
Increase the amount of external funding available for student scholarships and program development through the development of an Endowment. Includes establishment of a STEM Endowed Scholarship Fund that Palo Alto College will match 100% by non federal funds ($500,000).
