Angela Covo thought she wanted to be a doctor, but it wasn't until she got to San Antonio that she discovered her true calling.
Born and raised in New York City, she attended Loyola School, where she met her lifelong love, Freddie Covo. The first-generation American earned a BA at New York University with a double major in neuroscience and Spanish and a minor in chemistry - and fulfilled her dream of going to medical school at the University of Missouri.
Just a year later, Covo left medical school, realizing that wasn't her path. That summer, the Covos married and she worked as a cardiac catheterization tech at New York Hospital while her husband worked on their fledgling business, Normandie Chocolat.
The chocolate business grew quickly with Angela marketing and Freddie creating delicious confections - and they had to move quickly to find commercial space.
They set up shop in a beautiful storefront on East 116
street in "El Barrio" in East Harlem and ultimately moved the family's living quarters to the back of the store. By 1987, they learned retail was too seasonal for chocolates and reinvented the company to provide the city's best bespoke chocolates for hotel turndown service.
With the chocolate business settled and growing stronger, Covo turned her attention to a new career - in finance. While still a rookie at a formidable Wall Street firm, an old friend called to invite them to San Antonio.
The couple instantly fell in love with the Alamo City, and a sharp increase in crime where they lived and worked set the stage. Right after that Memorial Day weekend trip in 1994, they moved to San Antonio permanently, with three little kids and a dog.
By 2003, settled as a Texan, Covo revisited her passion to make a difference and abandoned a 10-year career as a successful financial adviser to pursue writing.
Freelancing for the
San Antonio Express News
, Dow Jones News Service and
magazine was tough and Covo enrolled in journalism classes at San Antonio College to hone her skills. She was soon named editor of the student newspaper,
An excellent training ground for aspiring journalists, SAC exceeded Covo's expectations. After completing the program, she joined the staff at San Antonio's famed
La Prensa Newspaper,
where she worked for fellow SAC alum Tino Duran and quickly became managing editor.
The Covos' entrepreneurial spirit took flight again in 2013 when Angela became intrigued by
magazine, a publication dedicated to the local food movement. Until the Covos stepped up, San Antonio was one of the few large American cities without it. Today, the wordsmith is editor-in-chief of
Edible San Antonio
, which she founded with her husband, Freddie.
