Alvarez is currently director of the TRIO STEM Student Support organization, offering free assistance to eligible SAC students majoring in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, as well as allied health majors. She will continue to oversee the TRIO STEM SSS program as well as the Veterans SSS program.

TRIO programs are funded by the Department of Education and cater to students who are veterans, first-generation students with limited income and students with disabilities.

The programs help underserved and underrepresented students develop the skills to successfully earn an associate degree. Eligible students receive support including customized career and academic guidance, tutoring, academic coaching, scholarships and grants, financial coaching, cultural activities, peer mentorship, university campus tours and other resources.

The TRIO program at SAC also serves eligible high school students from Edison, Highlands and Burbank High Schools in the San Antonio Independent School District.

Alvarez joined SAC in 2013 as a project director. She earned an associate degree in elementary education and teaching from SAC, a bachelor of applied science from Texas A&M University-San Antonio and a master of science degree in non-profit/public/organizational management from Our Lady of the Lake University.
