What is the Architecture program?

Established in 1958, the architecture program at San Antonio College has provided the first two years of professional education for generations of Texas architects, interior design, and construction management professionals. Architecture is the art and science of building. It is also a profession, which means it involves extensive training and formal qualifications. For architecture students that entails between five and six years of higher education as well as a specified amount of work experience to become eligible to take the Architecture Registration Exam. Once the registration exam has been passed, the goal of becoming an architect is realized.

What will I learn?

The architecture program is a pre-professional program dedicated to providing students with introductory and intermediate courses which promote the art and science of architecture, and which prepare them for transfer and advanced study. For majors, through development of an understanding of the core values of excellence, open discourse, responsibility and cooperation, students will hone the knowledge and skills needed to succeed at a senior institution to earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree and, ultimately, to excel in the profession of architecture. Students also learn to use industry-standard software and get practical experience with creative problem-solving.

What can I do with this course of study?

This program prepares students for transfer to a four-year university to continue to study architecture or a related field, such as interior design, landscape architecture or construction management. While many students transfer to universities within the State of Texas, a considerable number attend out of state institutions as well.

What's special about our program?

This program has more than 50 years of history at SAC, and architecture students have won national awards for their work. The architecture program is the only comprehensive lower division program offered at a community college in Texas that allows, upon successful competition, students to enter the junior year at senior institutions with which we have transfer agreements. With an Associate of Science degree in architecture, students can take multiple paths, including completing a Bachelor of Science in architecture or a Bachelor of Architecture, and from there complete the Master of Architecture degree.

Students who study architecture in college may go on to become licensed architects...
