Sandra Keno Holmes looks back at her time at San Antonio College in the dental assisting program, and remembers learning much more than techniques for cleaning teeth or how to make mouth molds. In fact, she attributes her professional success to her time at SAC.

While earning her associates of applied science in dental assisting, Holmes was raising her two daughters as a single parent. During her time at SAC, she learned how to cultivate a spirit of determination while juggling being a student and mother.

During her times of discouragement, she recalls receiving reassurance and support from her professor, Dr. Stella Lovato. Her fondest memories of the program were with her fellow classmates, saying “we learned to support one another in our studies.”

Holmes also learned the importance of understanding dental assisting’s relationship with technology and its evolving nature. With this in mind, Sandra was able to grow within the field of dentistry and in 2005 she became a member of the National Board of Dental Assisting.

Holmes currently serves as a dental assistant in the Processing Department at Joint Base San Antonio - Lackland. During her career at JBSA- Lackland, she has received multiple awards, including; Squadron Civilian of the Quarter, Squadron AFMS nominee and Squadron Civilian of the Year.

“I want to encourage prospective students, current students and alumni that anything is truly possible, but you must believe in yourself and continuously evolve,” said Holmes.
