Earlier this month, the Sembradores of San Antonio recognized Dr. Robert Vela, President of San Antonio College, as the “Sembrador of the Year” at the annual 2018 Sembradores Gala held at the Omni Colonnade on Saturday, October 6.

Each year, the Sembradores select members of the community who promote friendship among citizens and who improve individual lives through cultural and community awareness.

Dr. Vela is the 24th person to receive this honor. The first honoree was Henry B. Gonzalez, U. S. Congressman. Other honorees throughout the years have included: H.B. Zachary, Dr. Tomas Rivera, Archbishop Patrick Flores, Dr. Vern Loland, Dr. Charles Cottrell, and Dr. Robert Zeigler, President Emeritus of San Antonio College.

The Sembradores of San Antonio Educational Foundation promotes and funds higher education for deserving students in the San Antonio metropolitan area. Funds raised from two main events held each year go to support students who attend local seven institutions, including:

  • Our Lady of the Lake University
  • Palo Alto College
  • San Antonio College
  • St. Mary's University
  • University of Incarnate Word
  • UTSA
  • Health Science Center at San Antonio

Each year, the Sembradores present a check to San Antonio College to help provide scholarships to Latino students who attend SAC full-time, have completed 24 credit hours, and have earned at least 3.0 GPA. The Sembradores of San Antonio formed this educational endowment in 1988 and have continued to provide higher education opportunities to worthy students for more than three decades.
