SAC Joins United Way and HEB in Home for Good Project

For families making the move from homelessness to stable housing, the transition can be a little overwhelming. Fortunately, a new program from the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County, with help from HEB and San Antonio College, aims to ease part of the burden when setting up house.
Called Home for Good, this new signature United Way program will give families a house warming gift of sorts: a plastic bin filled with supplies for the kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom. Items such as laundry detergent, shampoo, toothpaste, paper towels, and disinfectant wipes – things that every home needs.
According to Brandyn Rodriguez, United Way vice president of community relations and volunteer initiatives, the program was made possible through a collaboration with HEB and SAC.
SAC recently became a partner organization with United Way when the Student Advocacy Center received a grant to create a helpline to support students.
Rodriguez said HEB volunteered 234 college interns to spend a morning assembling the kits. The grocery store chain also donated the items to be given away. Rodriguez said SAC volunteered to host the program and provide a space to put together 250 kits to be given out.
Allya Heitz is a former SAC student who is now at the University of Texas at San Antonio majoring in architecture. This summer she is interning at HEB and is happy to be part of the Home for Good project. “I was in the assembly line helping to put together the kits,” she said. “I definitely learned from SAC the value of giving back to the community.”
Taking a break as the last bins were filled, she added “it’s so great that this is going to help someone start a new home.”
The Home for Good program will distribute the kits though Catholic Charities, Haven for Hope, the Salvation Army, Samm Ministries, and the Student Advocacy Center.
