Throughout August and September, the SAC Staff Senate hosted a supply drive for members of the SAC community to donate supplies for a local school. And, the faculty, staff, and even some students, answered in stereo.

“I am extremely proud of the Staff Senate for their continued efforts to give back to our community,” said Dr. Robert Vela, President of San Antonio College. “Their leadership and coordination of this event is inspiring and is a prime example of why San Antonio College has been a pillar of excellence in our community for more than 90 years.”

From scissors to glue and notebooks to folders, the Staff Senate collected more than 1,000 items for the nearly 100 third graders at SAISD’s Margil Academy. The Staff Senate, along with President Vela and the Gnome Ranger, SAC’s spirit figure, delivered the items in person this morning.

Part of San Antonio ISD, Margil Academy has a non-traditional grade range from pre-kindergarten to seventh grade. According to this year’s Staff Senate President, Lenell Clay, Margil was chosen because the school falls within SAC’s backyard and is a direct feeder to one of SAC’s main feeder high schools. As well, according to the school administration, the school is 97% economically disadvantaged.

During planning for the school supply drive, it was discovered that the students are also in need of basic hygiene items.

“We need to find a way to get these students items like shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, and toothbrushes,” Clay said. “We will host another drive in November.”

In addition to the forthcoming drive to collect these items for the students, the Staff Senate is also planning the annual Angel Tree in which they will collect 600 presents so that every single child at Margil Academy will have at least one present to open on Christmas morning.

During remarks at the ceremony, Staff Senate President Clay told the students, “We love you, and we are here for you.”
