SPC 138th Commencement Ceremony
The St. Philip's College 138th commencement ceremony is confirmed for Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. in Freeman Coliseum at 3201 E. Houston St. The college awards a projected 640 degrees and certificates to 450 candidates for graduation in the event hosted by college president Dr. Adena Williams Loston with commencement keynote speaker The Honorable Peter Sakai, 225th District Court Judge (2006-present), addressing them.
In his capacity as judge, Sakai deals with San Antonio's toughest child abuse and neglect cases. When he speaks on Dec. 15, listening will be many St. Philip's College students who have given back while addressing health issues through the college’s fetal and child violence prevention events that use computerized mannequins controlled by the staff of the St. Philip's College Dr. Frank Bryant, Jr., Patient Simulation Center and Nursing Laboratories to safely inform local children from some of San Antonio’s higher violence areas on the impact of this violence. Some of the students Sakai will address include biomedical equipment technology students who might have kept the mannequins in running order---in the college or during clinical experiences at local hospitals. Graduating social science, nursing, criminal justice, sonography, physical therapy, medical lab technology and early childhood education students at the college---future professionals joining Sakai at various points on the front lines of protection for children---will also hear and gain inspiration from Sakai.
