22 Students, 41 Cakes: SPC Fall Invitational Cake Decorating Challenge in the News

St. Philip’s College’s Fall Invitational Cake Decorating Challenge is in the news with Fort Sam Houston ISD. Two of the high school’s students achieved notably during the Nov. 3 event that drew 11 hot food teams of two with 41 entered and the following order of finish.

Hot Foods Competition

Gold: Clark High School – Instructor Norma Roberts and student chefs Sean Parlato and Miriam Ortega
Silver: North Shore Senior High School – Instructor Sherissa Veal and student chefs Arnolofo Del Rio Aleman and Angie Rivera
Bronze: Madison High School – Instructor Lynn Rogers and student chefs Katie Burke and Brock Bowling

Cake Decorating Competition

Gold: Madison High School – Instructor Lynn Rogers and student chef Eriqa Flores
Silver: Clark High School – Instructor Norma Roberts and student chef Felecity Veliz
Bronze: Robert Cole High School – Instructor Rebecca Skidmore and student chef Catherine Nichols

According to the school district report, “ …two students competed in the St. Philips College Fall Invitational Cake Decorating Challenge. Eldred Brinson and Catherine Nichols each prepared a 3-tier decorated Thanksgiving theme cake. Catherine Nichols' cake was awarded the 3rd Place trophy and students learned the value of detailed planning and experienced the stress of transporting a large cake across town! These successful projects were made possible with the help of our brand new 20 quart commercial mixer! ”

The guests were provided neutral support for their competition by college hospitality students under the leadership of faculty member Chef Frank Salinas.
