The White Shaman Mural and the Painted Canyons of the Lower Pecos: Art, Culture and Creation at the Dawn of Civilization

As a guest speaker within the S.T.R.E.A.M. Lecture and Performing Arts Series at St. Philip’s College, Dr. Harry Shafer, Curator of Archeology at the Witte Museum, will deliver a presentation entitled, "The White Shaman Panel and the Painted Canyons of the Lower Pecos: Art, Culture and Creation at the Dawn of Civilization."  The discussion will follow.  The presentation will focus on the Rock Art of the People of the Lower Pecos River Valley, with special emphasis on the White Shaman Panel.  In addition, Dr. Shafer will speak about the cultural, physical, and historical conditions out of which the Pecos Rock Art emerged.  The presentation and discussion will take place via Zoom on Thursday, October 28th, 2021, from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m.

About Dr. Harry Shafer

Dr. Harry Shafer, Ph.D., is Curator of Archeology at the Witte Museum in San Antonio.  He received his doctorate in the field of anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin.  He is professor emeritus at Texas A & M University, where he was a member of the Anthropology Department for thirty years.  He has directed numerous archeological projects and authored more than 300 publications.  One of his recent books, Painters in Prehistory: Art and Archeology of the Lower Pecos Canyonlands, provides a fascinating, comprehensive overview of the art and culture of the hunter-gatherers who lived in the Lower Pecos River Valley for thousands of years, leaving behind breathtaking murals that offer some of the world's finest rock art.
