Physical Bodies in Political Spaces: A Primer on Biology and Political Behavior

On Thursday, June 16, the Science & Technology Institute will be hosting the virtual talk “Physical Bodies in Political Spaces: A Primer on Biology and Political Behavior.” In this session, Dr. Amanda Friesen will introduce the field of “biopolitics,” providing a broad overview of key findings and new research directions. Specifically, she will discuss research examining how political attitudes and orientations may emerge from our biology. Dr. Friesen will discuss how political scientists are employing life science methods and neurobiological approaches to demonstrate how political orientations may be instantiated in or reflected by our genetic traits, hormones, physiology, brain activity, sensory systems, and more.

Dr. Amanda Friesen is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Western University, London, ON, Canada. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She has conducted research in the areas of political psychology, biology & politics, resilience & efficacy, gender, religion & social identities. She has published over 40 articles and book chapters and has been cited in over 900 scholarly works.
