CALLING ALL SOUL FOODIES: SPC ANNOUNCES ONLINE RESERVATIONS FOR 2018 SOUL FOOD TASTE HAPPENING FEB. 22

St. Philip’s College announces additional details on the African-American Heritage Month event that San Antonio’s soul foodies belove most.

Online tickets are available for the 2018 Soul Food Taste event operated annually since 2002 by advanced St. Philip’s College Culinary Arts students Feb. 22 at 11:45 a.m. in the Heritage Room of college’s Campus Center building at 1801 Martin Luther King Dr. in the city's Denver Heights neighborhood (building marked as "12" on the interactive map http://alamo.edu/spc/imap).

“An event this size… it's an undertaking of the entire department, and we have chefs coming in the night before,” said college culinary services coordinator Kee Taylor. “The smoking of the ribs and preparing of the greens takes place the night before,” Taylor shared. “As far as our students, they are expected to arrive at 8 a.m. on Feb. 22, and all other ingredients are prepared the day of the event by the students,” Taylor said.

The menu for 2018 offers soul foodies a choice of two meats (fried mealed catfish---with a rèmoulade sauce, smoked ribs or oven-fried chicken drumsticks) and mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, mixed greens, corn muffins and sweet potato pie.

The Feb. 22 event is one of the last Soul Food Tastes to be prepared from the labs in the college’s venerable-but-aging Campus Center building, as a transformational change of venue is expected later this decade when the college opens its $30 million Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Arts Center of Excellence building. What began as a cash-only event in 2002 has become a credit card-only affair that attracts a loyal audience.
