HAPPENING THIS WEEK: ST. PHILIP'S COLLEGE HOSTS A BALLET COMPANY AND A SOLD-OUT "A WAY WITH WORDS" LIVE YOUTH LITERACY BENEFIT PERFORMANCE
The Summer 2018 season in leased spaces at St. Philip's College continues this week when the college hosts its first national radio program, " A public radio program about language examined through history, culture, and family " on June 21 and a ballet on June 23.
Following the June 16 performance of San Antonio Dances!: A Dance History, the national program on campus this week for its debut with a sold-out youth literacy benefit at the 600-seat Watson Fine Arts Center at 1801 Martin Luther King Drive in the city's Denver Heights neighborhood June 21 A Way with Words---the growing national call-in public radio show about words and how the world uses them. From question askers to anecdote sharers, a quick search of the A Way With Words web page archives documents that A Way With Words San Antonio listeners are documented wordies (is that a word?) at heart. The event sell-out was announced and retweeted June 15 by Texas Public Radio on Twitter, on a day the college was closed for summer hours. Posted online, the program's mission and vision are both inspiring a loyal audience:
Mission: Wayword, Inc., through the radio show and podcast of A Way with Words, through live events, and through its online presence, promotes better human communication and understanding. It does this by looking at language through the lenses of family, history, and culture, and by revealing human connections across eras, generations, cultures, and languages.
Vision: When we succeed in our work, we help normalize an appreciation for kind, fair, and learned communication. When we succeed, we also encourage an appreciation of literacy and education that pushes back against ignorance and intolerance.
The live-program-with-reception-for-ticketed-guests is June 21 at 7 p.m. in the center. Guests for this program intend to explore language as live audience members during a complete episode recorded with co-hosts Martha Barnette and Grant Barret. The program includes Q&A along with host insights on language, and the event is co-hosted by San Antonio Youth Literacy and Texas Public Radio. Find event details at San Antonio Youth Literacy's post on A Way with Words on Facebook.
Following a Nutcracker performance in December, the Greater San Antonio Academy of Ballet returns to the stage of the Watson for its Spring Showcase with performers in rehearsal and members of the Tohui Language Academy listed as performers at its Facebook page. The performance is June 23 at 7 p.m.
