Board Names Potter New Student Trustee

At a special meeting on April 19, the Alamo Colleges District Board of Trustees selected Markus Potter as the new student trustee. The Alamo Colleges District is the only community college system in the state with a student trustee. Potter will serve a one-year term, beginning May 1, 2018 and running through April 30, 2019.

“We appreciate the outstanding service to the Alamo Colleges of our previous student trustee, Alicia Moreno," said Alamo Colleges District Chancellor Dr. Bruce Leslie. "We look forward to the valuable contributions Markus Potter will make as the voice of students on our board," he added.

Potter, a student at Alamo Colleges District – St. Philip's College (SPC), with a 2.89 GPA, plans to earn a degree in biology and transfer to a university to train for career in scientific research, for which he has a passion. Potter has participated in research projects at the University of Texas San Antonio and UT Health San Antonio, formerly the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. He also has served as a member of the St. Philip’s College Eureka science club.

"Having attended three of the colleges of the Alamo Colleges District, I believe that I am qualified to offer the students’ perspective on the board, which is vital given the board’s emphasis on student success as its number one priority,” said Potter.

Potter’s community involvement includes removing graffiti in underprivileged areas of the city and city parks, as well as volunteering at the San Antonio Food Bank and the San Antonio Botanical Gardens Children’s Garden. He also served as a San Antonio Ambassador intern.

As the student trustee, Potter will serve as a non-voting student liaison to the board and the chancellor, representing students' interests at board meetings and other district meetings. He will undergo trustee training and, in recognition of his service on the board, will receive a $300 scholarship at the beginning of both the Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 semesters.

Alamo Colleges District – Palo Alto College student Monica Scraper was named as an alternate student trustee. She will attend board meetings if Potter is unable to do so.
