ST. PHILIP’S COLLEGE ANNOUNCES ONLINE RESERVATIONS FOR 2019 SOUL FOOD TASTE

St. Philip’s College announces details on the African-American Heritage Month event that many of San Antonio’s foodies belove most.

Online tickets are available online for The 2019 Soul Food Taste event operated annually since 2002 by advanced students in St. Philip’s College’s International Foods class Feb. 26 at 11:45 a.m. in the Heritage Room of college’s Campus Center building at 1801 Martin Luther King Dr.

“An event this size… it's an undertaking of the entire department, and we have chefs coming in the night before,” college culinary services coordinator Kee Taylor explained in 2018. “The smoking of the ribs and preparing of the greens takes place the night before,” Taylor shared. “As far as our students, they are expected to arrive at 8 a.m., and all other ingredients are prepared the day of the event by the students,” Taylor said.

The menu and pricing for 2019 are both online, helping folks secure their place at the table in advance for the big dream lunch --- and avoid the dreaded feeling that accompanies not purchasing online at https://secure.touchnet.com/C20015_ustores/web/classic/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCTID=3614 before the event sells out.

The Feb. 26 event is the end of an era that has become a tradition that draws a big community crowd, for the program is either the last or one of the very last Soul Food Tastes to be prepared from the labs in the college’s venerable-but-aging Campus Center building. A transformational change of venue is underway in the form of a $30 million Tourism, Hospitality and Culinary Arts Center of Excellence building. What began as a cash-only event in 2002 has become a credit card-only affair that attracts a loyal audience of 100, and is moving the college’s largest lunch service offered to the public to new heights and greater guest capacity.
