In partnership with San Antonio for Growth on the Eastside (SAGE), St. Philip’s College (SPC), the Alamo Colleges District (ACD), and the City of San Antonio (CoSA) decided to resume enrollment for SPC’s Professional Truck Driver/CDL training after temporarily being suspended due to restrictions placed on institutions of higher education amid the coronavirus. The decision was in response to the licensed commercial truck driver shortage that has affected local and regional commerce.

“Truck driving is a lucrative industry that most people don’t pay much attention to. For the past few months, our country has been relying not only on medical professionals to keep us healthy and alive but on our trucking industry as well,” said Tuesdaé Knight, President and CEO of SAGE.

Truck drivers are an essential element of commerce and are among those on the front lines as the U.S. fights through this time of national crisis. Between stocking grocery stores and delivering critical supplies to hospitals across the nation, the trucking industry is in high demand for the transport of crucial goods.

The SPC Professional Truck Driver/CDL program meets industry standards while maintaining governmental safety guidelines placed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With more than 2,000 alumni, SAGE's instructors are knowledgeable, patient, professional, and dedicated to student success in passing the CDL exam. Students are prepared for employment upon completion of the five-week training which takes place in a facility rated among the best in Texas.

In June, three students completed the training and were offered immediate positions in the local industry. The program makes it possible for students who may be experiencing financial hardships to enroll in the program by providing financial assistance through grant funding. Students interested in the training are encouraged to visit the Professional Truck Driver/CDL program webpage at https://www.alamo.edu/academics/program-finder/Workforce-Programs/cdl/.
