Meet Santiago, husband, father, and San Antonio native.

After having his son at 19, Santiago was eager to build financial stability and decided to enter the workforce directly after graduating high school.

For the last seven years, Santiago has worked as a security officer. He soon realized receiving an education is critical in reaching career advancement.

"I was offered a promotion that I was unable to accept because it required an advanced degree. I had to learn the hard way that going back to school was necessary, especially to alleviate living paycheck-to-paycheck,” he said.

Santiago’s ambition to return to school was fueled by both professional development and the motivation received from his wife of five years and seven-year-old son. His desire to grow his family and provide for them has also played a strong role in his academic achievements.

Santiago will be graduating with an Associate of Arts in Kinesiology. This will be his second associate's degree from St. Philip’s College. In the summer of 2020, Santiago earned an Associate of Science in Biology.

As an honor student, he will celebrate earning both degrees under the Summa cum laude distinction. His academic excellence has also led to his membership in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

This summer, Santiago will be attending Texas A&M University-San Antonio to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology Physical Education (Grades EC-12). He hopes to become the first in his family to earn a bachelor’s degree.

In his free time, he and his family enjoy hiking, biking, going to theme parks, and swimming at their local community pool.
