Culinary Arts Student Joins UTSA’s Child Development Center as Assistant Cook

St. Philip’s College Culinary Arts student, Juan Lopez, was recently hired as the Assistant Cook by the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Child Development Center (CDC). The position is part of a grant awarded by the United States Department of Agriculture – Child Adult Care Food Program (USDA-CACFP). 

“Mr. Juan has been a great addition to the kitchen staff of Team CDC. In alignment with UTSA’s mission for student success, the UTSA CDC serves as an interdisciplinary apprenticeship hub for students completing internships/practicums in their respective majors,” said Dr. Pamela E. Ray, UTSA Child Development Center Director. “While my formative years in higher education were with SPC, I was allowed to watch students receive a quality culinary arts education, and Mr. Juan has proven to be a valuable asset,” she added.

Lopez’s role includes assisting the lead cook in the planning and development of the Child Development Center menu, ensuring appropriate nutritional, safety, and health guidelines are met, maintain adequate inventory of cooking ingredients while adhering to the assigned food budget and ensure food is cooked satisfactorily in both quality and quantity prepared. 

“This opportunity has been a great refresher of the professional kitchen setting, it will be a great transition once I graduate. It was comforting finding out I would be working with someone familiar with the SPC Culinary Department,” said Lopez.

Juan is expected to graduate in May 2021.
