Director for Student Success Featured on Mural that Celebrates Hispanic Leaders

St. Philip’s College Director for Student Success, Elizabeth Castillo, was recently selected to be featured on the Sul Ross State University (SRSU) Living the Dream - Cultural Pride on Campus muralThe project depicts portraits of remarkable Texans of Hispanic descent who have achieved their dreams. The mural aims to inspire the community, many of whom are first-generation college students, to believe in themselves and make a difference. 

Castillo, who is an alumna of SLSU, will be featured on the second phase of the mural. The first phase completed in 2021, features twelve influential leaders, all Hispanic, from the region. The project, 7-feet tall and over 40-feet long, is located on the SRSU Alpine Campus outside the Gallego Center. The second phase of the mural will continue to focus on regional leaders of Hispanic descent. 

Castillo was also recently recognized by the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition as one of 10 national recipients of their Outstanding First-Year Student Advocate Award. The award honors college faculty, administrators, staff, and students for their outstanding work on behalf of first-year students and the impact their efforts have on the students and culture of their institutions. 

Castillo oversees several key initiatives at St. Philip’s College, she serves as the Chair of the New Student Convocation program (Tiger Nation Family Day), supports AlamoPROMISE Scholars, and oversees the St. Philip’s College Financial Literacy, Service Learning, and Tutoring and Technology Services. 

Throughout her 15-year career, Castillo’s work has focused on advocating and supporting underrepresented students in Higher Education. In addition to a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sul Ross State University, she holds a Masters of Fine Arts degree from Texas Tech University.

The second phase of the Living the Dream - Cultural Pride on Campus mural will be completed in 2022.
