Scholarship Golf Tournament - Student Golfer

SPC Tourney Turns 10

A tourney that celebrates the art of students giving back at St. Philip's College turns 10 this week and lots of folks are turning out to mark the occasion.

The college's Annual Scholarship Golf Tournaments include students and donors as golfers. Since 2008, the tournaments timed to coincide with the college’s anniversary observances have raised more than $1 million for the college's Scholarship Fund. Scholarship recipients gain knowledge and give back while learning marketable skills that serve the economic health of San Antonio.

In 2018 the tourney turns 10 as the college turns 120, and this A-plus alignment of philanthropy and academic excellence will also be celebrated during the March 2 event, both in sprit and in remarks from participants.

The college achieved a $1 million scholarship fundraising milestone that funds much of its student service during its 2015 Scholarship Golf Tournament. Proceeds from those goodwill events fund tuition and textbook costs for students who pledge to serve by gaining knowledge and giving back. Giving back through innovative service with organizations that help people has been diverse over 10 years, with students helping to make San Antonio a better San Antonio:

  • HEB Student Engagement Grant accounting students contribute to the largest poverty-reduction program in the U.S. by perennially operating one of the nation's top 15 most productive volunteer income tax preparing sites. In 2014, the students processed nearly $7.3 million in refunds for a college-record 3,620 local clients, a high social return on donor investment, in addition to being an innovative giving back opportunity.
  • Student Engagement Grant aircraft program students restored aircraft in the historic aircraft collection at the Texas Air Museum at Stinson Field, the second-oldest general aviation airport in continuous operation in the United States.
  • The work of 2014-2015 non-endowed Dr. Adena Williams Loston St. Philip’s College Presidential Scholarship recipients---each awarded an annual scholarship of $3,000---allowed giving back through service with such organizations as Meals On Wheels for elders, Respite House for children, Habitat for Humanity, Church Under the Bridge for homeless women, Children’s Hunger Fund and the San Antonio Housing Authority for child and adult literacy of nearly 25,000 SAHA residents. One student was a member of a team that helped to build bookcases and child-sized picnic tables at the college and providing the furniture to SAHA to create an environment for elementary-age students to gather for reading with their parents without having to leave their housing areas. The weekend and evening construction and education project aspired to transform the lives of 25,000 reading center patrons under the age of 18, improving literacy while displaying the college brand to encourage residents to finish high school and enter college.

Golfer/Donor registration for the March 2 event sponsored by CPS Energy starts at 7 a.m. and tee time begins at 8 a.m. at The Republic Golf Club at 4226 S.E. Military Drive. Find details at
