Academic Dismissal Petition Process

How do I petition under academic dismissal at Northeast Lakeview College?

To petition under academic dismissal with Northeast Lakeview College you must follow Steps 1-3 and request to petition within the deadline time frame listed below. Petition requests are only reviewed if you will be enrolling as a Northeast Lakeview College student. Students wishing to petition at a different Alamo College must submit the petition to that institution.

Disclaimer: The Academic Dismissal Petition does NOT apply to your financial aid status. This only applies as an appeal to register for classes with Northeast Lakeview College. If you have been suspended from receiving financial aid, then you must review the criteria to appeal your financial aid suspension here as these are two separate processes.

  • Complete the academic dismissal petition request form.

Once you have completed the admissions process, you may proceed with the next step, which is to fill out the NLC Academic Dismissal Petition Request form and submit the form online. You may click the link above, or use the QR code to complete:

Please do not submit this form until you have completed the admissions process Submitting prior to completion of the admissions process will delay your ability to move to the next step.

Upon completion of this form, if your admissions process is complete the Academic Dismissal petition will be sent to your ACES student email. Please allow for 4-5 business days for a response.

Emails will be the primary method of communication and all notifications will be sent to your ACES student email. It is expected that you will check your student ACES email regularly in order to ensure the process may proceed without delay.

  • Submit the academic dismissal petition packet.

You will receive an email to your ACES Student Email that will give you access to complete the electronic Academic Dismissal Petition form. This electronic form will be sent from the Adobe software and will allow you to make edits to the form online. Review all instructions in the form and complete before the final deadline. When you are submitting be sure that your packet:

    • Is completed in full- incomplete packets will not be considered eligible to move forward to the Dismissal Interview.
    • Please check your ACES student email frequently for updates regarding your petition status.

Note: Submission of incomplete packets will delay the petition process, as you will not be able to be scheduled for a Dismissal Interview until a completed packet has been resubmitted. Depending on the volume of packets received, it may take 1-2 business weeks for review. In order to ensure you are able to complete the petition process by the deadline, it is recommended that you begin the process early, and complete each step as soon as possible.

The last day to complete all portions of the packet as directed each part of term is listed below:

Students who do not complete all parts by the indicated deadline, 11:59 pm will need to begin the process for the next available semester.

  • Attend the Dismissal Interview

If all portions of the academic dismissal petition packet are complete then you will be contacted via your ACES student email with a request to book an academic dismissal interview. Be aware that a request for a dismissal interview will be reviewed AFTER submission of your petition packet. Some things to consider:

    • Interviews are scheduled in order of submission- on a first-come, first served basis.
    • In order to ensure you are guaranteed an opportunity to interview with an advisor, you must complete all portions of the Dismissal process by the priority deadline.
    • Missed interviews without prior notification will result in an automatic denial of your petition for the semester. If you must change your scheduled appointment date, please notify the Academic Dismissal team at nlc-acaddism@alamo.edu as soon as possible.
    • It is important that you be checking your email regularly and schedule your session as soon as possible. Interviews must be scheduled a minimum of 24 hours in advance, therefore once all interview spots are filled, we cannot proceed with your petition.

What happens during an academic dismissal interview?

Students will meet with a certified academic advisor to review their petition packet and discuss their plan to be successful. In the dismissal interview, the student will be given a decision as to whether the petition has been approved. If the petition is approved, the student will be eligible to register.

You will also be registered for the required Strategies for Success course (SDEV0171).

More information regarding this class is provided during the dismissal interview. During your interview, the advisor will discuss factors that impacted your prior academic success, how these factors have been addressed, and what tools you have developed since you last attended that will help you be successful upon your return.

In addition, specific resources and support services that will enable you to be successful will be recommended. If your academic dismissal petition is approved, then you will register with the advisor during your interview.
