AlamoPROMISE Scholar and Future Leader in Public Safety

Meet Penelope Flores, a proud San Antonio native, first-generation college student, and shining example of the opportunities made possible through the AlamoPROMISE program.

Growing up, Penelope always felt drawn to public safety. That passion led her to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Intelligence and Analysis at the Alamo Colleges. Her ultimate goal is to improve lives in her community by serving in public safety for the City of San Antonio.

When Penelope learned about AlamoPROMISE, she knew it was her golden opportunity to pursue higher education without the burden of tuition costs. “AlamoPROMISE helped me remove the financial barrier of having to save up money to pay for college,” Penelope shared. “Instead of working long hours at two part-time jobs, I was able to focus on my studies.”

That focus has led to impressive achievements. Penelope has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA every semester, was named AlamoPROMISE Student of the Month (July 2024), served as the student speaker at the Northeast Lakeview College VIA Link ribbon-cutting ceremony, and earned a place on the prestigious 2025 All-Texas Academic Team—an honor celebrating outstanding community college students across the state.

Beyond scholarships, Penelope also credits her success to the many resources available at the Alamo Colleges, including the Summer Momentum Plan, which allowed her to take additional classes at no cost; AlamoBOOKS+, which covers her textbooks; and the U-Pass program, which provides free VIA Metropolitan Transit rides. “These resources made a huge difference for me,” she said. “They helped me stay on track and eased the financial stress that often comes with college.”

Penelope also encourages fellow students to make the most of the support available. “Use your resources! The Alamo Colleges offer so many—from faculty-student mentorships to the Advocacy Centers. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.”

As she looks toward her future in public safety, Penelope reflects with gratitude.

“I would like to express my utmost gratitude and say thank you to all of the supporters who have made AlamoPROMISE possible. Because of your generosity, you are empowering students like me to pursue higher education and achieve our dreams. Thank you for investing in my future.”
